5 Spring Chores You Shouldn’t Overlook

Spring is a great time to get your house and yard sorted out for the year. The weather is starting to improve and that means we can open the windows and air the place out after winter’s chill. For a lot of people, spring means spring cleaning and the warmer weather is a great motivator when it comes to getting chores done that we might have been putting off during the cooler months. Of course, we all think about leaning out our closets, scrubbing the floors, and cleaning up the yard when it comes to spring cleaning, but there are a handful of home chores that are easily overlooked – but very important that should be put on our lists!

Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Unless you’ve had an issue cooking something smokey lately odds are you haven’t thought about your smoke detectors much over the last year. Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are an important safety feature in your home and while, fingers crossed, you never need them – they have saved countless lives when things go wrong. Spring is a great time to check them over, replace batteries and clean the sensors if needed. You might also go over your home and make sure that you have enough to keep your home safe.

The NFPA recommends having at least one smoke alarm on every level of the home — including basements — as well as in every bedroom, and outside of each sleeping area. If your home is larger you may need more.

Gutters

If you haven’t checked on your gutters lately now is a great time to look them over. Debris from falling leaves in the fall and winter can quickly clog gutters, especially if your home is in a woodsy area. Cleaning your gutters each spring is a great way to keep clogs from forming and prevent water damage to your home and roof.

There are plenty of gutter cleaning tools on the market to make this chore less daunting but if you really don’t want to tackle it yourself it might be good to hire some professionals. The cost of keeping your gutters clean is well worth it when you factor in the cost of repairing potential damage.

Septic System

While you are outside checking on your gutters and potentially scheduling some professionals to clean them out you might as well consider doing the same thing for your septic system. Scorpion Septic recommends that typical households should get their septic system pumped every 3-5 years. Scheduling regular maintenance for your septic system is a great way to head off problems and expensive repairs down the road. With septic systems, it’s much better to hire professionals for regular maintenance than it is to call for emergency service when there is a problem.

While getting your tank pumped is important, cleaning your system is also a part of regular maintenance that should not be ignored. Thankfully companies like Scorpion Septic handle septic cleaning and septic pumping near Dallas Ga. With over 18 years of experience, they have the entire process down to a science, you can go about your day and be confident that things will be handled properly. As homeowners and homesteaders I know I appreciate any chore that can be handled by someone else!

Check Your Air Filters

Ideally, this is something you should be checking and changing every three months but it’s a chore that often slips through the cracks. Regularly changing out the filters for your HVAC systems not only improves the quality of the air you breathe in your home but also reduces the wear and tear on your system. HVAC system repairs can be costly so preventing problems before they arise is highly recommended.

Thankfully this is a fairly easy chore to manage, make sure to measure or check the size of your current filters before replacing them, and then its a just a matter of sliding out the old and sliding in the new! I highly recommend having a garbage bag or container close at hand while removing the old filters, if they haven’t been changed in a while they can be quite dusty and no one wants to track that through their house!

Check Your Washing Machine Hoses & Dryer Vents.

We all know to check the lint traps in our dryers but a lot of people forget to regularly clean out the whole vent. Even if you religiously clean your lint trap a good deal of lint gets sucked through your system and because of it’s highly flammable nature dryer lint shouldn’t be allowed to build up! Many housefire have been caused by a build-up of dryer lint and none of us want that to happen. Cleaning out your dryer vent doesn’t have to be a hard task and should only take a few minutes of time with the proper tools.

While you’re cleaning out the dryer vents you might as well check your washing machine hoses for wear and tear as well. it’s much easier the replace a worn-out hose now than it will be to repair the water damage resulting from a rupture down the road.

While these chores might seem bothersome and something you might want to put off either due to the cost or just the unpleasantness of the task I highly recommend making sure they get done anyways. Sometimes a little bit of unpleasantness now is well worth the huge hassle you could face down the road!
