Dogs have a particular place in our hearts since having a dog as your best buddy has several advantages. They offer constant company, alleviating feelings of loneliness and increasing emotional well-being. Dogs provide unconditional affection and loyalty, forming a powerful link that adds to your life. They promote physical wellness by encouraging an active lifestyle through walks and play and they relieve stress and anxiety by providing security and comfort. If you have pets then there is little doubt that they have managed to worm their way into your heartstrings. Those little (sometimes big!) balls of fluff and feathers are always there to greet us with unconditional love and company no matter what is going on in the world around us. It’s been a challenging year (almost a year and a half really) and with all the extra time we’ve spent at home, I think a lot of us have become closer to our furry companions. Pets are like family to a lot of people and just like we love hanging pictures of our familyRead More →

As predicted this has been a slower month here on the homestead. Some months are just destined to be busier then others it seems like! That’s just the nature of homesteading today. With fall in the picture and the weather quickly turning cooler some activities are on the back burner. It’s unlikely that we will be adding any more livestock to the farm until spring, with the exception of raising some more quail and perhaps bringing a nice buck into our rabbit program. This is probably a good thing since the fall season also bring with it a lot of holiday fun. I love theRead More →

Several years ago I started raising backyard chickens so that my family could enjoy fresh eggs. The benefits of having a readily available source of good nutritious food has certainly proved itself worthwhile! No matter what happens at the grocery store I know I can count on the ladies and their eggs to feed us! In the past while raising baby chicks we were only able to raise four at a time due to space restrictions. Now that we have moved to a larger property it’s time to expand the flock! Most of us have first aid kits at home – or at the very least a slightly disorganized medicine cabinet with the basics! Especially if you have kids! Band-aids, thermometers and antibiotic creams seem to find their way into your cabinets on a regular basis because let’s face it … kids are accident-prone! Our pets might not suffer from skinned knees and small bumps quite as often but they still manage to find ways to hurt themselves now and then and being prepared with a pet based home emergency kit can really come in handy when those moments present themselves. While a first aid kitRead More →
