When you think about homesteading there is a pretty good chance that several things come to mind. Chickens and gardens tend to be at the top of that list but what about goats? Homesteading with goats is very popular for a variety of reasons but it’s not always the first thing new homesteaders think about. Cows and sheep might be first on your mind but you’d be surprised to find out that goats can meet a lot of your homesteading needs in one cute and mischievous package! Homesteading with goats was an easy decision for me for a lot of reasons and while some ofRead More →

If you have pets then there is little doubt that they have managed to worm their way into your heartstrings. Those little (sometimes big!) balls of fluff and feathers are always there to greet us with unconditional love and company no matter what is going on in the world around us. It’s been a challenging year (almost a year and a half really) and with all the extra time we’ve spent at home, I think a lot of us have become closer to our furry companions. Pets are like family to a lot of people and just like we love hanging pictures of our familyRead More →

Warmer weather and a break from the rain made the last two months a lot more enjoyable than February and January! Homesteading in March and April was our first look at how spring would treat us and let me tell you the spring rush is real. The woods around the house are coming back to life and with that has come a million and one projects we need to work on. It’s exciting and I have to admit I kind of love it! At the very least I like being able to do chores in the morning without freezing! Here is what we’ve done inRead More →

I am always looking for ways to save money and this is especially true for our food costs. Feeding a family of four can be pricy! My attempts to save money on the grocery bill have taken many forms over the years ranging from couponing to list-making & budgeting! We have cut out junk food and recently, thanks to our homesteading journey turned to hunting and raising our own meat. Of course, growing our own garden would be a great way to reduce our vegetable costs at the grocery store… but our garden is not yet producing and it’s going to take some time beforeRead More →

I love to let my birds roam the property but there are times when they need to be contained. This might be because we are introducing some new birds to the flock, I’m trying to keep them out of a certain area (like my garden), or because a few of them have been misbehaving. If you read our last homesteading update you might have seen that our ducks have been being a little bratty. They have started to explore a bit closer to the road than I like and no matter how many times I herd them back they keep trying. Enter portable poultry fencing,Read More →

Is Keto Hard to stick to?

Keto has become a very popular way of eating over the last couple of years and personally, it has done a lot of good for our family’s health and well-being. While it might not be perfect for everyone and I certainly encourage all of your to find and follow a healthy diet that works for you and your lifestyle goals no one should turn away from Keto because they find it confusing or overly expensive. Keto can be done in a simple and budget-friendly way. Here is how our family simplified keto so that it worked for our family. Making Keto Simple This post mayRead More →

It’s crazy how fast January has flown by! It seems like just yesterday that I was planning and hoping for the new year and here we are, already almost one month through it! It’s been cool and rainy here on the homestead so homesteading in the new year has been a somewhat messy affair so far and I think we are all looking forward to some warmer weather (and then we’ll probably complain about the heat but that’s just the way it goes!). Despite the rain and mud, we have managed to get a few things done around here – and we’ve made a lotRead More →

Sausage! It’s perfect for breakfast, for dinner and everything in between! We love sausage when it’s roasted with cabbage and of course, it’s amazing with all the fresh eggs we get from our chickens. Making homemade venison sausage seemed like a logical step to take when we started homesteading. It’s just as delicious as the venison jerky we shared earlier but does require a bit more work. Trust me, it’s worth it! *Note – This recipe is for non-smoked sausage although we add some smoke flavor they do have to be cooked thoroughly before eating. Every animal on our homestead has a purpose and the guinea fowl are no exception. But you might be surprised at what that purpose is! Raising guinea fowl is not overly hard but it does come with some unique and sometimes funny challenges. I have to say that guinea fowl have been an interesting addition to our homestead and I don’t think I’ve ever met a more useful, yet arguably dumb, farm bird in my entire life. Quite a contradiction right? Keep reading to find out what I mean! Raising Guinea Fowl On The Homestead. This post may contain affiliate links. If you make aRead More →
