It’s crazy how fast January has flown by! It seems like just yesterday that I was planning and hoping for the new year and here we are, already almost one month through it! It’s been cool and rainy here on the homestead so homesteading in the new year has been a somewhat messy affair so far and I think we are all looking forward to some warmer weather (and then we’ll probably complain about the heat but that’s just the way it goes!). Despite the rain and mud, we have managed to get a few things done around here – and we’ve made a lotRead More →

Sausage! It’s perfect for breakfast, for dinner and everything in between! We love sausage when it’s roasted with cabbage and of course, it’s amazing with all the fresh eggs we get from our chickens. Making homemade venison sausage seemed like a logical step to take when we started homesteading. It’s just as delicious as the venison jerky we shared earlier but does require a bit more work. Trust me, it’s worth it! *Note – This recipe is for non-smoked sausage although we add some smoke flavor they do have to be cooked thoroughly before eating. Every animal on our homestead has a purpose and the guinea fowl are no exception. But you might be surprised at what that purpose is! Raising guinea fowl is not overly hard but it does come with some unique and sometimes funny challenges. I have to say that guinea fowl have been an interesting addition to our homestead and I don’t think I’ve ever met a more useful, yet arguably dumb, farm bird in my entire life. Quite a contradiction right? Keep reading to find out what I mean! Raising Guinea Fowl On The Homestead. This post may contain affiliate links. If you make aRead More →

Starting a homestead has proven to be a whirlwind of activity! We’ve had some ups and some downs, a few things that didn’t go quite right, and a lot that did. For a year plagued with unusual difficulties and challenges, I’m pretty happy with the state of the farm and can only hope that 2021 will bring about a lot more positives for all of us. Homesteading has been both the culmination of a long journey and the start of everything. Several years ago we found ourselves unhappy with our current lifestyle, we spent most of our time watching T.V or playing video games, weRead More →

Jerky is one of those snacks that everyone in the family loves. It also happens to be pretty expensive and a lot of people feel that it is either too complicated or too time-consuming to make on their own. While it can be time-consuming I’m happy to say that it is far from complicated! The jerky that we have been making lately is venison jerky but if you don’t have access to deer meat you can substitute beef with similar results. Homemade venison jerky is delicious however and if you can get your hands on some deer I highly suggest giving it a try! ThisRead More →

October was a busy month here on the homestead although not all of it was due to the farm! I expect that November and December will be much the same but that’s the holiday season for you. I have to say that moving a bit farther north has made these fall months feel a lot more seasonal. Some of our leaves are actually changing colors! We never got that at the old house – mostly because we were surrounded by nothing but pine trees. Homesteading in October has been a mix of adjusting to the cooler temperatures and lack of daylight hours and enjoying itRead More →

I love Halloween! For as long as I can remember Halloween has been my favorite holiday. I mean, I love Christmas too but there’s something about being able to dress up and become whatever you want for one day that’s extra fun. Coming up with a costume and then going out trick or treating was pretty much the highlight of my year growing up. Plus candy, when your a kid the allure of candy is hard to resist! Of course this year things are a little bit different and while our community hasn’t outright banned Trick or Treating yet, I just don’t see how IRead More →
