Love Yourself – Being Single on Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is a wonderful holiday. Who doesn’t love a celebration of love and happiness? The truth is there are quite a few people out there who find Valentine’s Day painful. There is a such a drive to make Valentine’s day about couples that single people or those who have lost their loved ones can often feel left out in the cold. Being single on Valentine’s Day can be hard. But it shouldn’t be. In fact, in many cultures celebrations connected to Saint Valentine or St Valentine’s day were far more connected to the advent of spring than to romantic love.

Still, the fact remains, Valentine’s Day right now is highly geared towards romantic couples. Being single on Valentines Day is seen as either something to be pitied or a cause to hate the holiday altogether. I find this extremely sad and so propose the following to all my readers out there who are looking at this holiday with dread.

Being Single on Valentine’s Day

Love Yourself this Valentine’s Day

Being single on Valentine's day can be hard. Learn to love yourself. Buy yourself some flowers

This is a message to everyone out there who feels lonely this holiday season. You are loved. You are loved by your extended family, by your children, by your friends, by your pets, by your neighbors, by your co-workers & so many more. And even with all of that love, the most important thing is that you love yourself. Loving yourself can be difficult, all too often we are stuck on the faults we see in ourselves rather than the positives.

This Valentine’s Day I want everyone to take one step towards loving themselves. Celebrate who you are and the love you have around you, even if it can be hard to see. Just find one thing, big or small that you can do to make yourself feel better about you.

Being single on Valentine’s Day and Celebrating Yourself – Ideas for Valentines Day

  • Buy yourself flowers – Flowers have long been attached to Valentine’s Day, it all goes back to the original celebrations based on the arrival of Spring. So brighten up your home and pick out some flowers you love. Buying flowers for yourself mean you can go in any direction you want. Buy a succulent, buy an orchid, go crazy and buy a rainbow assortment of every strange flower in the store. Why not, it’s for you!
  • Get your hair done – Sometimes something as simple as a haircut can make you feel fresh and invigorated. A fresh start, a new you and who doesn’t like feeling primped and pretty?
  • Make or buy your favorite meal – You know whats great about not going out to eat at a fancy restaurant? The ability to eat what you want, when you want – without anyone judging you. Feel like eating nothing but fruit that may or may not, be dipped in whip cream for supper? Great! Go for it. If it makes you happy then do it and don’t feel guilty about it.
  • Spruce up your living space – It doesn’t have to be a costly full-fledged makeover, it can be something simple. A dollar store craft your find on Pinterest or a new piece of wall art you pick up at Target. Whatever it is, just make sure it’s something you love.
  • Make a change for you – Okay so the whole New Years Resolution thing is done and over with. Maybe you kept up with them and maybe not. It doesn’t matter. Here is your chance to make a commitment to yourself. Choose something you have been wanting to change for a while and start taking steps towards it. They can be small steps, change doesn’t happen overnight. The important thing is that you keep moving forward.

There are so many more things you can do to celebrate yourself this Valentine’s Day. Being single on Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be awful.
