Being a stay at home mom is a job in and of itself! Running a house and taking care of the kids has you running from the time you get up in the morning until you go to bed – and sometimes even sleep isn’t a guarantee! But what happens if you want to save for something special? Or you just want to help your family pay down some debt. You can’t afford to pay out for childcare and get an office job but you really want to make a bit of extra money. If that sounds familiar then one of these side hustles might be exactly what you’re looking for!
Side Hustles for Stay At Home Moms
Side Hustles For Creative Types
Arts and Crafts
It might seem a bit cliche but you can make some pretty good money selling arts and crafts from home. Especially during the holiday seasons! Selling arts and crafts used to require traveling to craft shows every weekend but thanks to the internet you can set up a simple website or store online. Places like Siteground make setting up your own website very simple or you can join a selling community like Etsy all from the comfort of your own home. Of course, local craft shows can add an extra bit of income as well so if you have the means and the time you should look into that too!
Working with art’s and crafts can be highly relaxing for many people but does require a bit of research! I suggest spending a bit of time coming up with a really great idea, making a few test items and working out if your cost of supplies vs the price people are willing to pay is worth it before going all in! Some items that are often popular are wreaths, macrame, homemade seasonal ornaments, and knitted or crocheted items.
Photography
While being a professional photographer requires a lot of specialized equipment and training you can still make a little bit of extra money if you have a good eye for capturing photos. Even on your phone! Today’s smartphones often boast camera’s that are capable of taking some great shots. In fact Samsung’s Galaxy 10 boasts a professional grade camera.
Bloggers, Social influencers and websites are always looking for great stock photos to use in their articles and sites like Shutterstock and Fotolia allow you to upload and sell your pictures. It’s unlikely you’re going to get rich selling photos this way but it’s a pretty easy to manage passive income.
Become an Influencer or Blogger
I’m not going to lie, becoming successful as a blogger or influencer is time consuming but it can be lucrative. Over the last several years many companies have started to see the value of micro influencers and they are willing to pay you to create content for them. This article is a pretty great example of this. I am not getting rich by running this blog but it did pay for my kids Christmas last year and I think that’s pretty good
While blogging used to require a good bit of technical knowledge the good news is that it’s pretty simple now. If you can write a word document and know how to copy and paste then you can probably run a self hosted wordpress site with no trouble at all!
If you don’t want to write a full blog then many people are successful working entirely off of Instagram. This can require a good bit of time before your account grows enough to start getting brand deals but sites and applications such as Heartbeat can be very helpful with this!
Side Hustles While Watching T.V
Online Surveys
I have talked about various online survey sites in the past. Places like Swagbucks are a common suggestion for people trying to make a bit of extra money from home. While I don’t do these anymore I did make quite a bit of money from them before starting this blog and I fully believe that they can be lucrative if you have the time for them!
The great thing about survey sites is that you can do them while watching TV. Many of these sites have various ways to earn including watching videos. You can set up the videos to run in the background while you do other things and while you won’t get rich you could make enough to save up for a special trip or item you really want! I paid for all the supplies to make this coat rack using money from survey sites and when my dog Connor hurt his leg as a pup? Guess what paid for the vet bill – money I’d saved from survey sites!
Careers From Home
Freelance Writer
If you love writing or know alot a particular subject but don’t feel like taking on the hassle of writing your own book or running your own website then maybe freelancing is for you!
Generally you get paid per word and while it can take a while to build up a good portfolio there are many online sites with job postings for you to pursue. Some companies hire writers for ongoing contracts and some companies hire per article. Either way there is a pretty good chance you can find something that fits your time limits. Over time freelancers can build a great reputation and start making a substantial income.
Medical Transcription
If you can type quickly and are willing to go through some training or have prior experience then this might be a suitable career to consider. The hours are flexible, meaning you can work on this in the evenings after the kids are in bed or while they are napping! Your pay is generally based on the amount you transcribe rather then hourly so you will have to put in some work if you want to make a decent income but companies such as iMedX hire people for this job on a regular basis.
While working for companies like iMedX might require some prior experience and a bit more of a time commitment they do have the benefits of offering a career with 401k plans, medical insurance and even continuing education reimbursement.
I struggled being a stay at home mum, for medical reasons I couldn’t return to work after giving birth to my LO. I took to blogging and walking. Then we moved to the countryside and I enjoyed going in the forest and taking pics. This went on to writing my book and then voluntary work. Now I work from home. Mummythomas.blog Focus on you when you can. When my little one is at nursery this is when I try my best to do something for me. House cl aning to of course ha!
The dreaded housecleaning always sneaks its way in there, doesn’t it? I love your blog! Doing something for ourselves is a very important part of our lives that it can be easy to lose track of when we have kids! Good on you for making it a priority!
I’m trying to build myself to becoming a fashion writer and while I’m blogging on the side it’s nice to know you can make money from blogging. I never heard of Heartbeat, going to check that out now and look up more freelance gigs! 🙂
